Pregnancy
Pregnancy Category C
Clonazepam is usually not used during pregnancy, although cases have been reported in animals with some developmental effects. However, a dose of 100 mg/kg oral (oral dose) of clonazepam was not associated with any teratogenic effects in the mouse fetuses at doses up to 200 mg/kg.[5]
In vitro testing of clonazepam has identified a number of effects on the embryo and fetal lung.[6]
Teratogenic Effects
Clonazepam is classified by the US FDA as a Class I prophylactic agent. Although this class means that there have been no reports of clinically significant fetal abnormalities, an infant born to a woman who was taking benzodiazepines during pregnancy has displayed an increased risk of mental retardation and impaired motor skills. This risk may be reduced by maternal treatment of the woman to discontinue or downregulate these drugs.[7] Therefore, the FDA is not recommending its use in pregnant women.[8]
Clonazepam can be used to manage patients with panic disorder, anxiety disorders or insomnia if there is an increased risk for developmental problems or other abnormal outcomes.[9]
Clonazepam Dosage and Administration
Clonazepam is a benzodiazepine, which means it works by blocking the effects of GABA (gamma-Aminobutyric acid), a chemical neurotransmitter.
Clonazepam will be required to administered intravenously (IV).
One IV dose of clonazepam is typically taken every 6 to 8 hours. A dose of 20 mg to 40 every 4 6 hours is usually adequate.
Clonazepam can be administered by mouth or nasal spray.
Clonazepam is often used at a dose of 60 mg or lower.
Clonazepam is considered to be highly effective at reducing anxiety in patients with panic disorder.[1] It will also be effective in treating anxiety symptoms those with moderate to severe anxiety, and it has been shown to be an effective adjunct psychotherapy for patients with severe anxiety. In one trial, 45% of participants who were treated for two weeks with a single dose of clonazepam experienced reductions in anxiety.[10] this trial, there was a trend for the reduction in anxiety to be greater those taking the anxiolytic than benzodiazepine.
